Over the past couple of years I have marveled at the number of obscure and lesser known movies that are getting released on Blu-Ray. To be sure, I'm thrilled about every single one even if there are more than a few I have no interest in owning. I'm in favor of making available every possible cult film that exists in the best presentation that can be created because, no matter how unknow it might be now, any fresh release gives a new generation of viewers the chance to discover these movies and become fans. But I have wondered when we would get to the point when a Blu-Ray release would finally strike me as simultaneously nuts and completely irresistible. For some it was the huge boxed set of Al Adamson films but, for me, this is it - GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN (1958) is coming to HD!
I am not going to claim this is a great movie or even particularly good but I have had a fascination with the monster films of Richard Cunha for a long time and I find his half-baked science fiction/horror epics to be endlessly entertaining! He made four of them and all came out in the same magic year of 1958! How did this happen? How do you make GIANT OF THE UNKNOWN, SHE DEMONS, MISSILE TO THE MOON and FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER back to back? How, dammit? And why were there never any more films from Cunha of the same type after that? Or do the films kind of answer that question on their own? Yeah, maybe.
Anyway - at least one of his (not so) classic monster efforts is coming to Blu-Ray later this year from The Film Detective label and I'm thrilled!
