My fascination with 1960's Hanna-Barbera cartoon shows and their record off-shoots continues with another James Bond inspired entry. Am I crazy for getting a kick out of these strange things?

 

Audio - Great Ghost Stories LP (1973)

Yes, I know Halloween was a few days ago but I'm still in the ghost story tellin' mood! Having started down the path of 1970's creepy records I just keep listening to them with a big smile on my face the entire time. This one features four tales and each has its points of interest as well as some nice sound effects. Recommended for the curious.

Here's a fun set of scary tales from a vintage record I can remember from my youth. There's no telling how long this album remained in regular October rotation in homes around the country. Now, it can be heard right off of YouTube!

The old Power Records superhero adventures are great entertainment and always bring me back to the Christmases of my youth. It's time to listen to them once again this year! 

Cereal Box Scary Records!

I was recently reminded of the odd 1970's phenomena of printing Halloween records on the back of cereal boxes. You would have to cut the square record off the box and then get it to lay flat enough on the turntable to play. As I remember it the little 45 sized freebies would often warp a bit making the entire process a little extra unnerving even if the stories were not all that scary. Would the needle stay in the groove long enough to hear the whole thing?  These were always fun little extras for the October season and they certainly worked to get me to beg mom for particular cereals even if I usually didn't care about that brand.

THE LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES (1974)

If you have never seen THE LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES you really should take the time to do so right now! LINK!  Or, as an alternative, you can listen to Peter Cushing narrate the film's story in a mere forty-five minutes in this amazing extra originally produced for the B-side of the soundtrack LP. Even if you've seen the film already it's very cool to hear Mr. Cushing relate this tale and it makes me wish Hammer had gotten him to do more such promotional recordings. Enjoy!

Scooby-Doo in The Mystery of the Missing Santa

For reasons that passeth all understanding, I have been watching several Scooby Doo Christmas shows this week. I had no idea there were so freakin' many of the damned things! I have a bundle of ten to check out and I'm not sure that's all that have been produced over the years. In a quiet moment I decided to see if any of them were available on YouTube but instead turned up this old record album with the Scooby gang involved in a Santa themed mystery. Amazing! I'm not sure what year this was released but I got a kick out it and I hope you do too.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Ghost Stories for Young People

Wish I had found this in October! Here is a 1962 album of several Ghost tales introduced by Hitchcock and read by expert voice actor John Allen. This is from a bit before my time but I seem to remember something very like this being in a childhood friend's record collection in my 1970's youth. None of these sounded familiar to me so I bet there were other such LPs out there and now I think I'll have to find some of them for next Halloween season. Enjoy!
