GREAT stuff.

This past year, I have been slowly getting my hands on a growing number of classic films on DVD or Blu-Ray, a mix of massive UPGRADES of shoddy self-recorded VHS copies from the 80s and brand-new ones I never had before after more than 40 years of collecting. The number of brand-new high-res scans and restorations is astonishing, allowing one to see films looking BETTER than they have since they were in theatres! I find myself saying, "This really is a GREAT time to be buying old movies."

...but also there's the occasional glitches.

For example, the 1931 Lugosi "DRACULA", the 1958 Hammer "DRACULA" and the 1966 "DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS", the Blu-Ray restorations are ALL way too dark!!! I had one allegedly-notable film critic tell me, "They look fine to me", completely ignoring that other films from the same periods (and the same outfits) DO look fine, and these specific instances, somebody behind-the-scenes SCREWED UP the remastering jobs!

Regarding the Hammers, "THE BRIDES OF DRACULA", "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", "HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES" and "THE DEVIL RIDES OUT", the current restorations are all STUNNING!! I'm hoping by the end of this year to have the entire Hammer DRACULA series upgraded, as most of them, I have never seen completely intact (apart from "TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA", which I did see in a theatre, but I've heard it may have been cut at the time-- ditto for "THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA", one of the better-written ones, often dismissed simply because it takes place in the "modern day").
