The Bloody Pit #213 - FROM BEYOND (1986)

Our second episode focused on the films of Stuart Gordon brings us to FROM BEYOND (1986). Troy Guinn joins John Hudson and I as we flip on the Resonator to see the unseen, squishy horrors hiding in the dark. The uncut version of the film has only been widely available since the 2007 DVD release and we discuss some of the things that were spit onto the cutting room floor.

The film sports a fantastic cast with Barbara Crampton and Jeffery Combs returning from REANIMATOR with the addition of Ken Foree they form a crime investigation team that gets far more than sane people are ready to accept. We examine the film’s story structure and the clever scripting that allows for escalating weirdness without compromising the characters. The wild cinematography is discussed as is the use of colored lighting to represent the shift into visions of the hidden monsters all around us. We talk a little about the film’s production as well as our reactions to the movie across the years. Hold onto your pineal glands and step into the attic with us, won’t you!

If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we’ll be back soon.

What I Watched in March 2025

I was only able to get out to see one film last month but it was brilliant. I highly recommend BLACK BAG (2025)! If you are seeking an intelligent, adult espionage tale that deserved more of an audience than it got. I suspect this movie will gain legions of fans over the next couple of years.

The List

THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK (1976) – 8 (rewatch)

CRY OF THE WEREWOLF (1944) – 6 (rewatch on Blu)

THE SOUL OF A MONSTER (1944) – 6 (very odd noir/supernatural horror)

THE SADISTIC BARON VON KLAUS (1963) – 8 (rewatch)

DICK TRACY’S DILEMMA (1947) – 7

THE DAMNED DON’T CRY (1950) – 8 (sharp noir drama with Joan Crawford)

DICK TRACY VS GRUESOME (1947) – 7 (rewatch on Blu)

BLACK BAG (2025) – 8

TRAP (2024) – 4 (wow! Does this go off the rails. Repeatedly.)

MYSTERY HOUSE (1938) – 6 (fun murder mystery)

KING OF CHINATOWN (1939) – 6 (what a cast in this Anna May Wong vehicle!)

FIVE TOMBS FOR THE MEDIUM (1965) – 7 (Italian version)

THE PLAYGIRLS AND THE VAMPIRE (1960) – 6 (rewatch)

Beyond Naschy #37 - THE SADISTIC BARON VON KLAUS (1963)

In this episode the Naschycast crew takes a deep dive into Jess Franco’s THE SADISTIC BARON VON KLAUS (1963) while hoping we can avoid the deadly quicksand. Bob Sargent returns and joins Troy and I to discuss this krimi-like murder mystery. It even has a little comedy relief. Luckily, very little of that!

This film seems to be less well thought of among fans of Uncle Jess’ black & white output and I’ve never understood why. It has a great cast with Howard Vernon leading the way as the most obvious suspect when young women in an Austrian town start turning up dead. Is there anything to the legend of a Von Klaus ancestor who reincarnates every few decades to terrorize the locals? Or is there a much more human reason that lovely ladies are wise to not venture out after dark? And just how sadistic will the film be allowed to go to depict the amoral depths of the killer’s lustful urges? Pretty far, it turns out!

If you have any comments or suggestions naschycast@gmail.com is the place to write the show. Thank you for listening and we’ll be back soon.

Trailers From Hell - THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1973)

The recent news that this film and its immediate sequel THE FOUR MUSKETEERS are coming to Blu-Ray from the Criterion Collection has me excited to revisit these wonderful adventures. There was a time in my youth when I watched them both several times each year but it has been a long time since I've ridden the road with these colorful characters. If you've never experienced what I consider to be the best version of the novel ever brought to the screen, there is no time like now!

Ghostly Haunts Cover Gallery

This Charlton horror comic debuted with issue #20, taking over the numbering of Ghost Manor. It lasted 39 issues and I try to locate cheap copies whenever I'm searching random comic boxes.

This is a rare gothic chiller that is a little heavy on the sexy!

New Commentary Tracks on the Way!

I have been very busy the past two months working two jobs and also fitting in helping to create brand new Blu-Ray commentary tracks for some obscure genre films. Luckily a couple of them have been announced this week and I can talk about them.

First up, from Vinegar Syndrome, Adrian Smith and I collaborated on a track for CURSE OF THE VOODOO (1965). This is producer Richard Gordon's follow up to the better known DEVIL DOLL (1964) and this release features both movies with new commentaries for both and a few other nice extras. We couldn't more pleased to be part of this!

Of course, the bigger surprise is the legendary (for various reasons) Italian monster/gore epic ALIEN TERROR (1980) is coming out on a new Blu-Ray that will have a commentary track by Adrian and I as well! Yes, this is the film also known as ALIEN 2: ON EARTH but it might not be as bad as you remember it. Really! Plus Adrian was able to talk to a couple of the actors that made the film 45 years ago (!) and they gave us some fun details about the production. I'm very pleased with how this track came out and I can't wait for others to hear it!

There will be more announcements in the next month or so! Stay tuned.
